New Library Hours!

Closing at 8 p.m. Monday – Thursday, starting July 1
Beebe LibraryBeginning July 1, 2009, Beebe Library will be closing an hour earlier on Monday through Thursday evenings. The new closing time will be 8 p.m. beginning July 1. As of that date, the library’s complete schedule of operating hours will be: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.


Job Seeking and Attitude

thinker1On Thursday, July 2 at 7 p.m., Beebe Library will offer a program focused on solving the problem of unemployment by a using different mindset. This presentation is centered on the idea that how you think about a problem is more important than the problem itself. Learn how using the conscious and subconscious parts of the mind in everyday actions can help solve problems and discover why volunteerism can be an effective method of tapping both parts of our minds while increasing the ability to network. There will be networking opportunities during/after the session.

John A. Volpe Photos Online

Highlight Beebe Library’s Digital Wakefield History CollectionEisenhower and Volpe
Among the hundreds of historical images on Beebe Library’s web site (www.wakefieldlibrary.org) are a number of images related to one of Wakefield’s favorite native sons, John A. Volpe.
Volpe was born on December 8, 1908 in the Water Street home of his Italian immigrant parents. A plaque marks the house of his birth. A Republican, Volpe was elected Governor of Massachusetts in 1960, 1964 and 1966.

Pleasure Island Exhibit Commemorates 50th Anniversary

In commemoration of the 50th Anniverary of "Pleasure Island," the legendary amusement park that operated from 1959 – 1969 in Wakefield, Massachusetts, Robert McLaughlin has created a display of Pleasure Island artifacts and memorabilia at Beebe Library.
A local historian and author, McLaughlin wrote Images of America: Pleasure Island published in June, 2009 by Arcadia, and now available in book stores and at Smith Drug Store, 390 Main St., Wakefield.
A number of special events, including walking tours of the old Pleasure Island site, are scheduled for June, 2009. For more info and a complete schedule of events, go to the Friends of Pleasure Island web site.
