Holly Festival at MBS Church

The annual Holly Festival and Craft Fair is coming to the Most Blessed Sacrament Parish in Greenwood on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be a children’s table where they can buy that special gift for their families … and don’t forget your camera! Santa will be joining us from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.


Dec. 5 Craft Fair at Unitarian Universalist Church of Wakefield

The elves at the Unitarian Universalist Church are busy getting ready for their seventh annual Holiday Craft Fair. On Dec. 5, grab a friend and visit the Fair taking place in their handicapped accessible hall located at 326 Main St. The doors will be open to the public from 9 a.m. through 2 p.m.

Parenting Series Continues

Wakefield Parent Partnership Lecture Series continues on December 1 at 7:30 at the Galvin Middle School Edna May Paulson Library.  The speaker will be Lynne Reeves Griffin, RN, Med author of “Negotiation Generation: Take Back Your Parental Authority Without Punishment” (Penguin 2007).

This is the second in a series of four lectures planned for the 2009/10 school year by the Wakefield Parent Partnership and made possible by donations for the Wakefield School PTOs.  Tickets are $7.00 in advance and $8.00 at the door.  For more information visit wakefieldparentpartnership.org.


Kids at the Holiday Stroll

The first Tis the Season Holiday Stroll will be held on Saturday, December 5 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the downtown business district.  Main St., from Richardson Ave to the Rookery and Albion St., from Main St. to North Ave. will be closed during those hours.

There will be several activities with kid appeal

Direct Mail to the North Pole: Mail letters from a secure mailbox located in front of the Wakefield Daily Item parking lot on Albion St.  This drop of is a direct line to Santa who will be arriving Saturday, December 12 at his Lion’s Club workshop on the Upper Common in Wakefield.

Polar Express Gift Basket: Participants in the Holiday Stroll will have an opportunity to make a donation to the Stroll’s designated non-profits at the Donation Center in the lower level of the Americal Civic Center.   While making your donation drop by the Holiday tent and register for an opportunity to win a Polar Express Gift Basket with four tickets for the Dec. 13 noon trip, a Polar Express book, a whistle and a conductors hat.

Hat Parade: The Hat Parade for kids and adults will begin promptly at 3:00 from the Americal Civic Center and march around  the Rockery to the Beebe Library.  The parade will be led by the Wakefield High School marching band and will include Mrs. Merry Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, The Lion and perhaps an elf.  Those wishing to be in the parade should be at the Americal Civic Center by 2:30.  Wear your favorite holiday hat.

Tree Decorating: Ten holiday trees will be set up on Main St. to decorate.  There will be one for each of the four public elementary schools.  Students of each school are invited to decorate their school’s tree with a hand-made ornament.  The other trees may be decorated by anyone.

Performances: The High School Band will play holiday music.  A storyteller will be in front of Active Motion Physical Therapy at 416 Main St.  There will be Irish step dancers in fron of the Sovereign Bank on Main St.   Students from Catch the Funk and Dance Movement will perform on Main St. and on the Library steps.  Carolers will also be performing throughout the afternoon.

Holiday Stroll

The opening event of the December 5 Holiday Stroll will be a Holiday Hat Parade led by the Wakefield High School Marching Band.  The parade will start at the Americal Civic Center, march to the Rookery and end at the steps of the Beebe Library where the band will play holiday tunes before breaking into smaller groups that will entertain throughout the afternoon.

Those wishing to participate should meet at the Americal Civic Center parking lot no later than 2:15 p.m. on December 5. wearing their favorite hat.  The parade will start at 3:00.

Throughout the Stroll, there will be performances by The Senior Tones,  Catch the Funk,  small groups from the WHS marching band, the Middle School Chamber Group, carolers from St. Joseph School  and Nazareth Academy and musical performances by the professional musicians of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Works by local artisans and artists will be on display in shop windows along both Main St. and Albion St.  There will also be a temporary gallery at 78 Albion St.

Kids and their parents are invited to “A Special Visit with Santa” at the Commonwealth Century 21 office at 29 Albion St. from 9:30 t0 11:30.  There will be complimentary photos and refreshments.

Commonwealth, The Century 21  office at 29 Albion St. will be open from 3:– to 7:00.  Kids and parents can drop in for a movie and create a holiday memory with  art supplies.  Refreshments and use of the restrooms will be provided.

After the parade shoppers are welcome to shop at the 40 stores participating in the Holiday stroll and enjoy discounts, raffles and holiday treats.  There will also be more entertainment.
