Most of these writers precede the Stieg Larsson Millennium trilogy but the popularity of this series is reason enough to re-visit the Scandinavian authors. “One reason for the sudden prominence of Scandinavian crime on U.S. shelves is the region’s newly found diversity since the break down of the Soviet Union and the resulting culture clash in a once very insular society. Henning Mankell’s Faceless Killers appeared in the U.S. in 1997, introducing readers to struggling police inspector Kurt Wallander who is so unlike the American hard-boiled hero and just as compelling. Mankell began the influx of Scandinavian authors who write about post-iron curtain crime and the new opportunities for corruption that occurs with the opening of borders.” (Ott, Bill. “A Hard-Boilied Gazetteer to Scandinavia,” Booklist, May 1, 2007, p.8-11).
Thanks, once again, to Librarian Beth Radcliffe for her help in updating this list. 11/30/10

It seems hard to believe that summer’s already over and many of us, kids and adults alike, are going back to school. Beebe Library can make research easier because of its many online databases provided free to you as a library cardholder. These resources are available on the 26 computers in the library, and also at your home, school or office if you have access to the Internet.
The databases include magazine and newspaper articles, including scholarly journals, encyclopedias, and even book recommendations. Many of them are provided by state funding from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. You can easily access all of our online resources 24/7 by visiting at wakefieldlibrary.org/databases.

For kids in grades 5 & up
In August, as part of the Summer Reading Program, kids were taught to use graphic tablets and Photoshop to create their own digital art.
In September, two more workshops will be taking place, taught by Peter Simeti of Painted Heroes. Classes will be taking place on September 9 from 3-5 pm, and September 11 from 2-4 pm, and are for kids in grades 5 and up. Sign up for either session here.
In addition to these workshops, young adults can check out the graphic tablets for two hours at a time with their library cards for use at any of the computers in the Youth Room. All computers on the lower level are equipped with Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premier Elements, and can be used with the tablets to edit photos, create movies, or paint and draw.
