Women’s Self-Defense

On Wednesday, March 23 from 7:00-9:00 PM, Sensei Rick Alford and the staff from Defensive Edge Martial Arts will offer a class for women ages 15 and older on self-defense. Gain confidence as you learn how to identify and respond proactively to potential threats.

Regardless of our employment status, we’re all watching our budgets these days, while becoming more aware of the benefits of eating locally and in-season. Is it possible to enjoy the benefits of eating locally grown, seasonal foods on a limited budget? Amy McCoy, author the cookbook Poor Girl Gourmet: Eating in Style on a Bare-bones Budget, will discuss her approach to eating well on a budget while maintaining high-quality food standards. This program is free and will take place in the Lecture Hall at 6:30 p.m.

February Vacation Programs

Middle School kids can drop by afternoons, Tuesday-Friday of vacation week to play video games in the Youth Room from 2:00-4:00.  Platforms inclue Wii, Xbox, Playstation, and Nintendo DS and DSI. 

On Saturday, February 26 at 2:00, the Anime Club will meet.  This week’s movie will be Ouran High School Host Club.    New members welcome.


“Stories for a Safer Wakefield” Programs & Events

Local events during March to focus on deterring violence
As part of “Stories for a Safer Wakefield,” a month-long community inquiry during March intended to provoke thought and discussion about violence and its deterrence, Beebe Library has scheduled a number of programs and events to help adults and children understand and mitigate violence in our lives.

On Tuesday, March 1 at 7 p.m., the library will offer a public screening of Affliction, a powerful movie based on the novel by Russell Banks. The film is set in a small New England town and explores the connection between alcohol and domestic violence. Directed by Paul Schrader, Affliction stars Nick Nolte, James Coburn, Sissy Spacek and Mary Beth Hurt. The screening is free and will take place in the Beebe Library Lecture Hall.
