Family and friends of Kelly McLean, a Galvin Middle School student who died this past March 3 of unexpected complications following tracheal reconstructive surgery, are sponsoring a walk around Lake Quannapowitt to raise funds for the Kelly McLean Memorial Scholarship fund, a permanent fund of the Citizens Scholarship Foundation of Wakefield.
Kelly’s Thumbs-up Walk will be held on Thursday, May 13. Registration will begin at 4:30 on the Lower Common with a donation to the scholarship fund of $5.00 a walker. The route will be around the lake with a loop through Lakeside Cemetery. The walk will begin at 5:00 and end, with remarks by the family, at 7:00 p.m.
String backpacks, jellied bracelets and T-shirts (sponsored by Galvin Buddies) will be available for cash purchase. Music at the beginning and end of the walk will be provided by Pete Healey. The rain date for the walk is Thursday, May 20.

The Wakefield Special Education Parent Advisory Council will be offering affordable summer tutoring for all Wakefield families. High school students, enrolled in honors or AP classes will tutor children for $12.00 an hour. All tutoring sessions will be held at the Beebe Library. Students will tutor in all content areas including summer reading and comprehension. They will not offer tutoring in the Everyday Math Program. Students will have to be notified 24 hours in advance of any sessions that need to be rescheduled of there will be a charge for the missed session. Space is limited and the program will run for 6 weeks form July 5th through August 13th. The North Suburban Family Network, a program of Hallmark Health and the Community Partnership for Children of Melrose, Stoneham andWakefield, is pleased to bring you the following Parent Education Workshops for the winter of 2010.

Routines, Rituals and Transitions: Monday, Feb. 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. Registration is required. Whether we are smoothing out the edges on “who had it first” or working with the challenge of a full-blown temper tantrum, there are times when every parent could use a few fresh ideas. Facilitated by Scott Noyes from Empowering Programs.
Fostering Resiliency in Children: Tuesday, March 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. Registration is required. The pressure of life today overwhelms many children and families. The obstacles and challenges seem overwhelming and the light at the end of the tunnel just may be a train quickly approaching head on. This workshop will lead you to become a resiliency mentor. Presented by Jeannine Fitzgerald, certified behavioral consultant, Better Behavior Bureau.
North Suburban Family Network will host a weekly playgroup for parents of children from birth to six months. The Parent and Infant group meets on Mondays from 11-12:30 at NSFN, 16 Franklin St., Melrose.
The winter session runs from Jan. 11 until April 12. The group will not meet on January 18 or February 15 due to holidays. For additional information, call 781-622-2722.
For young teens struggling with alcohol addiction, there is a Young Teen AA group that meets Mondays at the First Parish Congregational Church, 1 Church St., from 6:30 to 7:15.

The Shepherd’s Table of the First Baptist Church of Wakefield, 8 Lafayette St., will hold its next meal on Monday, Jan. 11, serving from 6-7 p.m. in Fellowship Hall of the church.
All those in need of a meal and warm fellowship are welcome to attend at no charge. Reservations are not necessary.
The menu consists of fresh garden salad, chicken cacciatore, pasta, pudding and fresh baked cookies, and coffee, tea, soda, milk and water.
