Kids in grades 5 and up are invited to take advantage of a day off from school to come learn how to make the most of Photoshop’s many effects and filters!
Wednesday, December 15 there will be two classes with Peter Simeti of Painted Heroes which will focus on using effects and filters in Adobe Photoshop. Registration is required as space is limited in these two classes. Classes will take place from noon to 1:30, and 2:30-4pm. Some familiarity with Photoshop is recommended, but not required. This will be a hands-on workshop where kids can practice using the software to create their own art.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners and matching funds from the Beebe Friends of the Library, the Youth Room has Photoshop installed on all public computers on the lower level, and has ten WACOM Bamboo graphic tablets available for in-library use. Come by the Youth Desk for more information on the tablets or software!

To sign up for one of the class sessions, click here.

On Tuesday, November 9 at 2:30, kids in grades 5 and up are invited to a manga swap in the lecture hall.

Manga is the name for Japanese comic books, which often have a distinctive artistic style and format. Manga is becoming incredibly popular here in the States, and Beebe Library used grants from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners to add to the comics and manga collection in the Young Adult section.

Manga fans, are you running out of space for your books? Ready to read something new, but need to clear away some of the old stuff? Bring your manga books to the library and trade with other kids! This will give you a chance to find your next favorite series and get a start on it for free! You can talk about your favorite stories and characters with other fans, clear out your bookshelves, and take home new things to fill the shelves back up with! The swap will happen Tuesday, November 9 at 2:30 in the Beebe Lecture Hall. Snacks and soda will be served.

Need another reason to come to the swap? We’re going to be discussing the formation of a library Anime Club! Even if you don’t have books to swap, come anyway and find out what kinds of things we’ll be doing in the club, and get involved!

In August, as part of the Summer Reading Program, kids were taught to use graphic tablets and Photoshop to create their own digital art. In September, two more workshops will be taking place, taught by Peter Simeti of Painted Heroes. Classes will be taking place on September 9 from 3-5 pm, and September 11 from 2-4 pm, and are for kids in grades 5 and up. Sign up for either session here.

In addition to these workshops, young adults can check out the graphic tablets for two hours at a time with their library cards for use at any of the computers in the Youth Room. All computers on the lower level are equipped with Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premier Elements, and can be used with the tablets to edit photos, create movies, or paint and draw.

September is Art Month for Young Adults at Beebe!

After teaching our young adults to use this technology for creating art, we want to show it off! There will be an Art Show happening the last week of September at the library. Submissions of all kind will be considered from kids in grades 5 and up, with a preference given to art that has been digitally created or manipulated in some way. More details about the show and submission guidelines will be coming soon.
