It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year already, but tax season is upon us once again, and Beebe Library has what you need to make the process easier. For both state and federal tax returns, the library will be carrying the most common forms and instruction booklets up to and beyond the April 15th deadline. They can be found near the Reference Desk on the main floor of the library building.
If the library happens to be out of the form or booklet you need, we have a notebook of forms provided by the federal government, from which you can photocopy the forms you need. The state used to have a similar notebook, but they are no longer producing it in paper form.
Most forms, including unusual or obscure ones, can also be printed out from the state or federal government’s tax web sites. There you can also find plenty of information on various tax topics as well as instructions on how to file your return electronically or telefile if you wish. If you are unfamiliar with computers or the Internet, a reference librarian will be happy to print out forms for you or teach you how.
It is important to note that again this year, as a cost-saving measure, the state has printed far fewer Massachusetts state tax form booklets than previous years. As a result, most libraries in the area will run out of their supplies early, and they cannot be replenished. Post offices and banks usually no longer carry Massachusetts state forms either. To obtain state forms or instructions after the initial supplies have run out, you will need to print them from the Internet. So come early, we do not expect our supply to last much beyond February.
If you need forms or instructions for past years, the library keeps seven years worth of state and federal forms that can be photocopied. Prior year forms are also available on the government’s web sites.
Please be aware that library staff are not trained to provide tax advice or help you with your tax return, but reference staff will be happy to help you find the forms or publications you need, or direct you to resources that can assist you. In addition to the many publications provided by the government, the library also has books such as J.K. Lasser’s and other guides that can help you through the maze of details you need to know for your return.
For further assistance in person, the nearest IRS Office for federal tax assistance is in Stoneham at 1 Montvale Avenue (at the corner of Main Street and Montvale Ave.). They are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
