Trowel used in laying library cornerstone in 1922
Wakefield resident Damien Hurlburt (left) presents Library Director Sharon Gilley with a trowel used by Lucia Beebe at the 1922 cornerstone-laying ceremony for the Lucius Beebe Memorial Library, Wakefield Massachusetts. Hurlburt found the trowel while cleaning out the basement of his 26 Daniel Rd. home. The inscription on the trowel reads, “USED BY LUCIA BEEBE LAYING CORNERSTONE OF LUCIUS BEEBE MEMORIAL LIBRARY WAKEFIELD MASS. MARCH 17, 1922. Lucia Beebe was the niece of Lucius Beebe (for whom the library is named) and the sister of Lucius Morris Beebe, who was famous for his high style, society journalism and interest in railroading.
