Supper SleuthsIn some of the titles the investigator is a faculty member at a college or university in the United States, Great Britain, or another country. Mostly amateurs, sometimes the sleuth is from the local police or is a private detective. Usually the crime is a murder. There are a great many female professors getting their hands dirty in the academic mystery world. The Campus Crime allows intelligent sleuths with specialized knowledge to shine. Professors in some of the novels use their scholarly training for crime detection away from their own campus. Eccentricity is a characteristic of most crime investigators on or off campus, and the cozy has a comfortable home. The historical mystery fares well on campus as well as the occasional grittier story. Regardless of who is trying to solve the crime, the books demonstrate that academic life is a hot bed of intrigue, not a soft, cushy job.
