Beebe Library will be holding small informal overview sessions in January on downloading library ebooks to various devices using the library’s Overdrive service. If you’d like to attend a session, sign up at the Reference Desk or phone 781-246-6334, x2 to sign up and get more information.
Helpful guides on downloading ebooks via the library’s Overdrive service are available on Beebe Library’s web site. Handouts are also available at the Reference Desk.

Looking for titles for the new ebook reader you received during the holidays? Beebe Library has a growing collection of ebooks to checkout online for free.

The collection has grown 35% in the last four months. Children’s picture book titles have recently been added, joining popular fiction, non-fiction, teen titles, children’s books and classics in the library’s online collection. All can be borrowed free of charge to residents of communities served by the North of Boston Library Exchange (NOBLE), and cardholders of participating college libraries by entering your library card number.

The library collection is compatible will all the major devices, including the Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, and the iPad and other tablets. In addition to ebooks, audiobooks are also available for the iPod and MP3 players.

A user can have up to four downloadable items checked out at the same time, any combination of e-books or audiobooks. Unlike audio downloads, ebooks can be “returned” early to access additional titles. There are no fines or overdues with the ebooks or audiobooks because the titles expire at the end of the loan period automatically.

The library ebook and audiobook service is funded by the 28 member libraries of NOBLE.

NOBLE is a non-profit founded by participating libraries thirty years ago to share resources and improve service and efficiency through shared automation.

You either love them or hate them — but there is no escaping the Best Books of 2011 lists. Most of these titles do have some things in common — they appear on multiple lists and they are books that force you to slow down and enjoy the author’s ability to put words together in unexpected and intriguing ways. Book Awards and “Best of” lists reflect the particular taste of whoever happens to be judging for that particular award or list, so the discerning reader will bear that in mind while perusing and comparing these ubiquitous and entertaining compilations.
One of the best places to find these lists on the Internet is on the Reader’s Advisory Blog Online compiled by the Readers’ Advisory librarians at Libraries Unlimited. The compilation of “Best of” lists is eclectic and informative. The RA Blog Online includes “The New York Times” Top 10 list; “Brain Pickings” 11 Best Science Books; 2011 New and Notable Books about Africa from allafrica.com; “The Economist” Best Books; Best New Manga of 2011 and an assortment of “Best of” lists from other newspapers and magazines. Exploring these lists will provide endless topics of conversation and continue to supplement your personal “must-read” lists.

Here are a few examples of books you’ll find: Ann Patchett’s State of Wonder follows a pharmacologist who travels into the Amazon jungle in search of a rule-breaking doctor, who may have found a cure for infertility. Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness may have inspired the plot of this riveting novel, but Patchett’s take on the clash between nature and civilization, and her fierce female scientists, are radiantly contemporary.
Martha’s Vineyard resident Geraldine Brooks’ Caleb’s Crossing is another popular choice. Once again, Brooks takes a remarkable shard of history and brings it to vivid life. In 1665, a young man from Martha’s Vineyard became the first Native American to graduate from Harvard College. Upon this slender factual scaffold, Brooks has created a luminous tale of love and faith, magic and adventure.
Nonfiction titles on many lists include The Swerve: How the World Became Modern by Stephen Greenblatt. According to the Washington Examiner, “Harvard professor Greenblatt won the National Book Award for this spellbinding cultural history and deserves it. In his hands, the story of how a 15th-century Italian discovered an ancient Roman poem that paved the way for the Enlightenment becomes as warm and accessible as a campfire yarn.”
Another Massachusetts author is also on many of the lists: Townie: A Memoir by Andre Dubus III. Abandoned by his father at the age of 12, Dubus hardened himself for a new life filled with poverty, drugs and fistfights. In this moving and gritty memoir, the author of “House of Sand and Fog” shows how writing fiction ultimately led him away from violence, and helped him forge a new relationship with his father.
Children’s lists are rich in picture books: Valorie Fisher’s Everything I Need to Know before I’m Five and Jon Klasser’s I Want My Hat Back are among them. The blog has lists devoted to every genre and age group and is great fun to explore for reading suggestions.

If you have an opinion of what is the best book published in 2011, email Leane Ellis at the library: ellis@noblenet.org and we will publish the list on our website in January 2012. Please include why you think this title qualifies for the Best of 2011.

Murder knows no geographical bounds, so if you’re going to read about it, New England is as good a place to start as any.
The strange story of serial imposter Clark Rockefeller first came to the public eye when his ex-wife reported to Boston Police that Rockefeller had kidnapped their young daughter during a supervised visit. In The Man in the Rockefeller Suit, Mark Seal tells a gripping true story of deception and murder worthy of Patricia Highsmith’s fictional Tom Ripley.

Many still remember the headlines surrounding the mysterious 1981 disappearance of Harvard graduate student Joan Webster, who vanished without a trace from Logan Airport after returning to Boston from a Thanksgiving weekend visit to her parents’ home.
In The Paradiso Files, prosecutor Timothy M. Burke makes the chillingly convincing case that small-time Boston hood Leonard “The Quahog” Paradiso was responsible for Webster’s death as well as the murders of as many as seven other women and countless sexual assaults.

Sebastian Junger, author of The Perfect Storm, grew up in Belmont. In the spring of 1963, the quiet suburban town was rocked by a shocking sex murder that exactly fit the pattern of the Boston Strangler. On the day of the murder, Albert DeSalvo – the man who would eventually confess in lurid detail to the Strangler’s crimes – was also in Belmont, working as a carpenter at the Jungers’ home just a few blocks from the murder scene.
In A Death in Belmont, Junger chronicles his family’s possible connection to one of the most controversial serial murder cases in America.

In Safe Harbor, Brian McDonald tells the story of Elizabeth Lochtefeld, a glowing, charismatic woman who’d built a million-dollar fortune in New York City before retiring at age 44 to the fashionable island of Nantucket.
When Elizabeth met thirty-seven year-old Thomas E. Toolan III, a handsome Wall Street ace, she thought she had finally found Mr. Right.
She was dead wrong.
Two days after putting an end to the affair, Beth disappeared, never to be seen alive again.

Another Massachusetts seaside location, Gloucester, is the setting for Dogtown: Death and Enchantment in a New England ghost town.
Author Elyssa East combines her interest in art with a literate exploration of the strange, dark history of a wilderness ghost town and a brutal 25-year-old murder.

In the Lakes region of New Hampshire, everyone has an opinion about the bizarre case of 24 year-old Liko Kenney and police officer Bruce McKay. In May 2007, Kenney shot and killed Officer McKay following a dramatic chase that began with a routine traffic stop. Kenney, cousin of ski legend Bode Miller, was then shot and killed by a shadowy passerby. Was Kenney a punk who liked to taunt the police? Or was McKay a rogue cop who dispensed vigilante justice? In Bad Blood: Freedom and Death in the White Mountains, local author Casey Sherman travels to the “Live Free or Die” state in search of the truth.

The recent capture of fugitive Whitey Bulger has sparked new interest in the Boston underworld figure.
No one knows Boston organized crime better than popular radio talk show host Howie Carr.
His books, The Brothers Bulger and Hitman: the Untold Story of Johnny Martorano display his encyclopedic knowledge of all things Bulger.

Bill James, the noted baseball statistician employed by the Boston Red Sox, is also a true crime fanatic. In Popular Crime, he offers short personal musings on some of the most notorious cases in criminal history, from Dr. Sam Sheppard to JonBenet Ramsey.
All titles are in print and available from Amazon.com and other booksellers as well as the library.

The fall of 2011 has been very good to some first-time novelists. Already well-received–Chad Harbach’s The Art of Fielding is about a baseball star at a small college near Lake Michigan who launches a routine throw that goes disastrously off course and inadvertently changes the lives of five people. Library Journal hails this title as a “highly enjoyable and intelligent novel [that] offers several coming-of-age tales set against the background of an exciting and convincing baseball drama. Harbach also paints a humorous and resonant portrait of a small college community while effectively portraying the Wisconsin landscape and a lake that provides an almost mystical source of solace and renewal.”

We the Animals has been a popular small morsel at just 144 pages but packs quite a wallop. Told in the form of linked short stories, Torres’ first novel is an impressionistic examination of a family of mixed race and ethnicity.
The stories focus on the family’s three boys and are often accounts of fighting over blankets or flying trash-bag kites, but because the parents’ marriage is contentious, some are tinged with violence.
Torres novel is a pleasure to read from a gifted writer with a special talent for tone and characterization.

Here are a few firsts that are under the radar.

Meredith Mileti’s Aftertaste finds Mira Rinaldi, the co-owner of a chic New York City trattoria, battling to save her restaurant and pick up the pieces of her life after she catches her husband with another woman. Sprinkled with mouthwatering food descriptions and recipes, Mileti’s first novel examines the daily activities and self-reflections of a busy career woman who suddenly becomes single and directionless as Mira searches for the ingredients she needs to complete her own recipe for happiness. This succulent story will please readers of such similarly satisfying fare as Laura Esquivel’s Like Water for Chocolate.

In Nancy Jensen’s The Sisters, growing up motherless and under the thumb of a cruel stepfather in 1920s Kentucky, Bertie Fisher and her older sister, Mabel, are torn apart by a painful misunderstanding that reverberates through the lives of their daughters and granddaughters. First-time novelist Jensen redeems her soap opera plot with an observant eye, adept characterization, and a keen grasp of social issues. There is plenty of drama, much of it illuminating the changing roles of women in society over a span of 70 years. Jensen nicely integrates history and themes such as the enduring ravages of war on the men who fight them.

Looking for a haunting romance? The Taker, Alma Katsu’s imaginative, wholly original debut is the story of Lanore McIlvrae, a young woman who is found in the Maine woods claiming she has killed a man. Luke, a young doctor, hears the story of how she was abandoned by a lover 200 years earlier and abducted by a centuries-old Hungarian count who granted her eternal life. Readers will not be able to tear their eyes away from Katsu’s mesmerizing tale. Alchemy and love prove a volatile mix in Katsu’s vivid novel, which toggles between the present and the past. Paranormal and hard-core romance readers might enjoy this debut.

This next gripping novel is not an easy read. Bonnie Nadzam’s Lamb gives Lolita a 21st-century spin. Unlike Humbert Humbert, David Lamb is not obsessed with underage girls but stumbles across one. David’s wife has left him, his father has died, and his work life is in shambles when outside a strip mall he meets a seventh-grade girl whom he entices into a pretend kidnap game “to scare” her friends. What he does once he gets her in his car is drive her home, but he also continues to meet her and give her rides to school. Their friendship intensifies, leading to a road trip, “Just a little secret trip in your secret life,” from Chicago to an abandoned family house of David’s in rural Colorado. There they hole up and eat junk food while Tommie’s mother has no idea where she is. What David promises the 11-year-old is a fantasy, and he comes across as a father figure, a friend, but at times something far more creepy. With Colorado neighbors snooping, the questions become, how far will this go and what will happen if anyone finds out? Nadzam has a crisp, fluid writing style, and her dialogue is reminiscent of Sam Shepard’s. The book suffers from the inevitable Nabokov comparison, but it’s a fine first effort: storytelling as accomplished as it is unsettling. This book is a compelling variation on a disturbing but all-too-familiar theme that will find an audience among serious readers.

For historical fiction lovers, there is Stella Tillyard’s Tides of War. A tale set in Regency England and Spain during the Peninsular War follows the interwoven stories of love and betrayal that shape the marriage of Harriet and James, who are separated when James joins the Duke of Wellington’s troops. The fictional newlyweds’ story is entwined with the historical duke and duchess of Wellington, along with other real and imaginary characters, to give a broad perspective on English society of the early 19th century. Readers share Harriet’s discovery of the waltz, Jane Austen, and ice cream, and witness cutting-edge battlefield surgeries under real-life Surgeon Gen. James McGrigor This sophisticated, unusual portrait of Regency society will appeal to all readers of historical fiction, especially admirers of Bernard Cornwell.

M.L. Longworth’s Death at the Château Bremont is the first novel in a projected series set in Aix-en-Provence. Booklist compares Longworth’s voice to “ a rich concoction of sparkling Dorothy Sayers and grounded Donna Leon.” The novel introduces readers to Antoine Verlaque, the handsome and seductive chief magistrate of Aix, and his on-again, off-again love interest, law professor Marine Bonnet. When local nobleman Etienne de Bremont falls to his death from the family chateau, the town is abuzz with rumors. Verlaque suspects foul play and must turn to Marine for help when he discovers that she had been a close friend of the Bremonts. This is a lively whodunit steeped in the rich, enticing, and romantic atmosphere of southern France. The action proceeds through the classic device of interrogating suspects. The sexual tension and maneuverings that accompany the interviews are, at times, hilarious. Longworth has lived in Aix since 1997, and her knowledge of Provence is apparent on every page.

Killed at the Whim of a Hat by Colin Cotterill is a welcome spin to mysteries featuring a sleuthing medical examiner. Rather than rely upon a familiar Western setting, Cotterill transplants the genre to 1970s Asia, mixing mystery with politics, mysticism, and themes such as international relations, government bureaucracy and racism. Cotterill’s witty and fast paced narratives are not only filled with cultural insight, but also feature compelling characters, particularly his clever protagonist, Laotian National Coroner Siri Paiboun. Finding his charming characters and crisply plotted narratives in these mysteries with an educational undercurrent, readers will enjoy Cotterill’s other works. Start with: The Coroner’s Lunch.

If you have not been introduced to Meg Gardiner’s Jo Beckett series (The Dirty Secrets Club), then discovering her will be a treat. In her fourth outing, The Nightmare Thief, Beckett, a San Francisco forensic psychiatrist, teams up with Gardiner’s other series character, reporter Evan Delaney (China Lake). When Evan contacts Jo in San Francisco for help with a story on the suspicious death of attorney Phelps Wylie, whose body was found in a mine in the Sierras, Jo agrees to conduct a psychological autopsy on Wylie. Back in San Francisco, Autumn Reiniger embarks on an urban reality game run by Edge Adventures, a 21st birthday present from her father, the director of a hedge fund, Reiniger Capital, but is soon kidnapped, along with her friends, by a group impersonating the Edge crew, raising the stakes. In the Sierras, Jo and Gabe run into Autumn and her kidnappers, who are demanding millions for her safe return. Gardiner really gets the adrenaline pumping in this latest breathless tale.

The books are available to residents of member communities and staff and students of member academic libraries at no charge.

NOBLE has doubled the size of its eBook and audiobook collection over the past year to meet rapidly growing demand. The collection is funded by the 28 member libraries of NOBLE, a non-profit organization founded by area libraries collaborating to share resources and provide electronic resources regionally and cost-effectively and improve service.

It is the story of Precious’s son, Abdul, opening on the day of his mother’s funeral. This book brings us deep into the interior life of Abdul Jones, son of Sapphire’s unforgettable heroine, Precious. It is a story of survival and awakening, and of one young man’s remarkable strength. We meet Abdul at age nine, on the day of his mother’s funeral. Left alone to navigate in a world where love and hate sometimes hideously masquerade, forced to confront unspeakable violence, his history, and the dark corners of his own heart, Abdul claws his way toward adulthood and toward an identity he can stand behind. In a generational story that moves with the speed of thought from a Mississippi dirt farm to Harlem in its heyday; from a troubled Catholic orphanage to downtown artist’s lofts, this story tells of a twenty-first-century young man’s fight to find a way to the future. Intimate, terrifying, deeply alive in Abdul’s journey we are witness to an artist’s birth by fire. — From publisher’s web site.
