Pleasure Island Exhibit Commemorates 50th Anniversary

In commemoration of the 50th Anniverary of "Pleasure Island," the legendary amusement park that operated from 1959 – 1969 in Wakefield, Massachusetts, Robert McLaughlin has created a display of Pleasure Island artifacts and memorabilia at Beebe Library.
A local historian and author, McLaughlin wrote Images of America: Pleasure Island published in June, 2009 by Arcadia, and now available in book stores and at Smith Drug Store, 390 Main St., Wakefield.
A number of special events, including walking tours of the old Pleasure Island site, are scheduled for June, 2009. For more info and a complete schedule of events, go to the Friends of Pleasure Island web site.

December is such a busy month. Partying, shopping, wrapping – who has time to come to the library? Who has time to read? It may not be the first place you think of this time of year, but the library does have some great books to assist you with gift ideas. The following titles are on display near the Circulation Desk.

Gifts to Make, by Better Homes and Gardens has wonderful ideas for easy to make gifts. Hand painted flower pots, goodie baskets and mulled cider bags are just a few examples of easily assembled gift ideas.

Harvest Resources at the Library

Fall into ReadingIt’s harvest time in New England. Peaches, apples, raspberries, corn and pumpkins are all waiting for you. To get the freshest possible, you can either pick your own or go to a farmers’ market. But before that, come to the library and check out some cookbooks with recipes for those great fall dishes, succotash and apple pie.

The New England cookbook: 350 recipes from town and country, land and sea, hearth and home, by Brooke Dojny, is a good place to start.
