Movies are a great way to escape the summer heat. Here are just a few of the newest feature film titles available at Beebe Library.

Brooklyn’s Finest features an all-star cast including Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, Wesley Snipes, Will Patton, Lili Taylor, Brian F. O’Byrne, Shannon Kane, Ellen Barkin and Vincent D’Onofrio. After having endured extremely different career paths, the lives of three disheartened Brooklyn police officers will collide with destiny when they all wind up at the same fatal crime scene.

In From Paris with Love, a low-ranking intelligence operative working in the office of the U.S. ambassador in France takes on more than he bargained for when he partners with a wisecracking, fast-shooting, high-ranking U.S. agent who’s been sent to Paris to stop a terrorist attack. Starring John Travolta, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Kasia Smutniak, Richard Durden.

Ben Stiller stars in Greenberg, as a single, fortyish man deliberately doing nothing. In search of a place to restart his life, he agrees to housesit for his brother in LA and tries to reconnect with his former bandmate and successful ex-girlfriend. But old friends aren’t necessarily still best friends, and Greenberg soon finds himself forging a connection with his brother’s personal assistant, Florence. Greenberg has come to realize that he may at last have found a reason to be happy. Co-starring Chris Messina, Greta Gerwig and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Hot Tub Time Machine stars John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke, Crispin Glover, Lizzy Caplan and Chevy Chase. When a group of middle-aged men travel to a ski resort seeking a temporary escape from their failed, miserable lives, a drunken accident in a hot tub sends them back to 1986, where they get a chance to relive a night from the past and possibly change their futures forever.

In The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Harriet Vanger disappeared forty years ago from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found and her beloved uncle is convinced she was murdered and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced investigative journalist Mickael Blomkvist and the tattooed and troubled yet resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate.

In Stolen, Detective Tom Adkins is a devoted cop haunted by the unsolved disappearance of his young son eight years earlier. But when Adkins discovers the buried remains of a boy who was brutally murdered more than half a century ago, he becomes obsessed with investigating the long-forgotten crime. Is the 1958 mystery surrounding down-on-his-luck family man Matthew Wakefield and his own abducted son linked in any way to Adkins’ tragedy? Starring Jon Hamm, Josh Lucas, James Van der Beek, Jimmy Bennett and Jessica Chastain.

In She’s Out of My League, average guy Kirk (Jay Baruchel) can’t believe his luck when, against all odds, Molly, a successful and outrageously gorgeous babe, falls for him. Kirk is stunned and so are his friends, his family, and even his ex-girlfriend. Now, he must go to great lengths to figure out how to make the relationship work and prove to himself and everyone else that she is not out of his league. Co-starring Mike Vogel, T.J. Miller, Alice Eve, Nate Torrence, Krysten Ritter, Geoff Stults and Lindsay Sloane.

Summer is movie time, and Beebe Library has the latest movie titles available on DVD. The following are among the New Feature Films now available at Beebe Library: Extraordinary Measures, starring Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser and Keri Russell; Alice in Wonderland, featuring Johnny Depp; Shutter Island, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Ben Kingsley; The Road, based on the Cormac McCarthy novel and starring Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron; and Dear John, based on the Nicholas Sparks novel.

New Feature Films on DVD

A good movie is one way to take your mind off the heat during the dog days of August, and Beebe Library’s collection includes the following recent feature film releases on DVD: Australia, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman; Bart Got a Room, with William H. Macy and Jennifer Tilly; Coco Chanel, featuring Shirley MacLaine and Malcolm McDowell; Confessions of a Shopaholic, with Joan Cusack and Hugh Dancy; Knowing, starring Nicolas Cage and Rose Byrne; and Mysteries of Pittsburg, featuring Peter Sarsgaard and Meena Suvari.

Additional movies recently added to the library’s DVD collection include: Revolutionary Road, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet; Streets of Blood, featuring Val Kilmer and Sharon Stone; The Edge of Love, with Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller; The Great Buck Howard, starring John Malkovich and Tom Hanks; The International, with Clive Owen and Naomi Watts; The Haunting in Connecticut, featuring Virginia Madsen; and The Soloist, starring Jamie Foxx.
The following recently released movies are also available at the library: “American Affair,” “Coraline,” “Everest,” “Fragments,” “Hotel for Dogs,” “Labor Pains,” “Mutant Chronicles,” “Obsessed,” “Race to Witch Mountain,” “Retribution Road,” “Visioneers” and “12.”
Feature films on DVD can be rented for $1 per week. The library uses proceeds from rentals to purchase more DVDs and maintain the feature film collection.

New Movies on DVD

Beebe Library has added some of the newest DVD releases to its feature film collection. The following are just a few of the latest additions.

In Bride Wars, starring Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway, lifelong best friends Liv and Emma find themselves engaged at the same time and go to a wedding coordinator to set up the perfect wedding. A clerical error puts them both down for nuptials on the same day at the same time. One of them will have to switch the date. More than the bouquet goes flying when these desperate brides-to-be fight it out for matrimonial supremacy.

Doubt, with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Meryl Streep and Amy Adams is set in 1964, at St. Nicholas in the Bronx. Father Flynn is a charismatic priest who is trying to upend the schools’ strict customs, which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Aloysius Beauvier. The Sister is the iron-gloved principal who believes in the power of fear and discipline. But when Sister suspects that Father Flynn is paying too much personal attention to Donald, the school’s first black student, Sister Aloysius sets off on a personal crusade to unearth the truth and to expunge Flynn from the school.

In Last Chance Harvey, starring Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, Harvey is a divorced, down-on-his-luck music jingle composer. Kate is a lonely British airline employee. Chance brings them together. Harvey’s intention is to only stay for the wedding ceremony of his daughter, he rushes off to the airport so he can make it home for an important music industry meeting. When Harvey gets let go from his job, he decides to stay in London and go to his daughter’s wedding reception. He finds Kate and asks her to accompany him to the reception.

The Wrestler stars Mickey Rourke, Marissa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood. Back in the late ’80s, Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson was a headlining professional wrestler. Now, decades past his prime, he barely gets by working small wrestling shows in VFW halls and as a part-time grocery store employee. He faces health problems that may end his wrestling career and is attempting to come to terms with his life outside the ring. He wants to reconcile with the daughter he abandoned in childhood and begins a relationship with a stripper. He struggles with his new life and an offer of a high-profile rematch with his 1980s arch-nemesis, ‘The Ayatollah,’ which might just be his ticket back to stardom.

In What Doesn’t Kill You, starring Ethan Hawke, Mark Ruffalo and Amanda Peet, childhood friends Brian and Paulie do whatever it takes to survive in the dog-eat-dog South Boston neighborhood they live in. As they grow up they find themselves involved in organized crime and jail becomes part of doing business on the streets they call home. Brian uses his time in jail to get clean while Paulie makes plans for one last job that requires Brian’s help. Brian must decide if he should stand by his friend or salvage his family.

Silent Films on Tuesday May 5

Join the library for a walk down memory lane when Richard Hughes will present the “Golden Age of Silent Films” on Tuesday, May 5 at 7:00pm in the Lecture Hall. Silent movie master pianist Richard Hughes will take us back in time when films were black and white and there were no sound tracks. Mr. Hughes will open the program with ragtime and novelty piano pieces of the 1920’s era to put the audience in the mood. Then he’ll discuss the silent movie era and play some examples of “Mood Music” that were used to accompany these entertaining silent movies. A short silent cartoon and silent comedy film will then be presented with Mr. Hughes accompanying the films with original piano pieces. No registration is required and the program is sponsored by the Friends of the Beebe Library.

Holiday Music & Movies at the Library

Beebe Library has a large collection of movies on DVD and music on CD that are just the thing to get you in the holiday spirit. The Christmas DVDs and holiday CDs are now on display on the main floor of the library. You can rent DVDs for $1 a week, and borrow music CDs for three weeks at no charge.
The following are just a few of the holiday movies currently available on DVD at the library:
The Christmas Blessing, featuring Neil Patrick Harris and Rob Lowe. - When a medical resident loses a patient, he moves back home with his father to rethink his career. His world is turned upside down when the lives of the woman he loves and an innocent young boy are in crisis. Will a Christmas miracle save them all?

Deck the Halls, with Matthew Broderick and Danny DeVito. Two neighbors in a small New England town go to war when one of them decides to decorate his house with a so many Christmas lights that they are visible from space. The neighborhood is turned upside down as the families try to discover the true meaning of Christmas.

White Christmas, Two song-and-dance men (Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye) team up in show business after the war. Joining forces with a sister act (Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen), they trek to Vermont for a white Christmas. The real adventure starts when Crosby and Kaye discover that the inn is run by their old army general who’s now in financial trouble.

Bad Santa, starring Billy Bob Thornton and Tony Cox. Willie is a thief who teams up with his dwarf friend Marcus, for a very special Christmas scam. Willie gets a job as Santa Claus at a shopping mall, Marcus tags along as an elf, and they use their employee status to rob stores blind just before Christmas. But Willie is a bitter and foul-mouthed alcoholic who doesn’t care much for kids. A mall’s manager is certain something’s wrong, so he asks the chief of security to check out Willie. Meanwhile, one of the kids Willie is forced to talk to becomes a regular customer.

Polar Express, with Tom Hanks. When a doubting young boy takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe.

Elf, starring Will Ferrell. A human baby accidently ends up at the North Pole and grows up among the elf community. Buddy, as he comes to be known, knows that he’s “special”. When he’s 30, Buddy learns from Santa that he’s really a human. He decides to go in search of his father, to find out where he belongs. He walks to Manhattan, and is immediately run over by a cab. His father at first rejects him and Buddy ends up in a department store where other elves are working. But all the while, things are looking bad for Santa Claus. When Santa crashes his sleigh in Central Park, it’s Buddy’s moment to shine.

Eight Crazy Nights, with Adam Sandler. When a small-town, extremely disgruntled guy, Davey Stone, faces another holiday season in his New England hometown, he does what he always has – he messes up big time and lands in jail. But after a few surprises – including the mysterious reason for Davey’s bad attitude and the reappearance of his childhood sweetheart – Davey might just decide he has a reason or two to change his ways.

“Christmas with the Kranks,” starring Tim Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis and Dan Ayckroyd. When only child Blair leaves the family nest, Luther and Nora decide to book a cruise and skip Christmas altogether. Their decision to boycott tradition has the whole neighborhood in an uproar, and when Blair calls on Christmas Eve to announce a surprise visit with her new fiancée, the Kranks have just twelve hours to perform a miracle and pull themselves and their neighbors together to throw the best celebration ever.

The Christmas Shoes, with Rob Lowe and Kimberly Williams. A workaholic attorney crosses paths with a young boy on Christmas Eve and rediscovers the true meaning of love, life, and the holiday season.

Beebe Library has added some of the latest feature film releases to our
DVD collection. Among the recent additions are:
“21,” starring Jim Sturgess, Kate Bosworth, Laurence Fishburne and Kevin Spacey. Ben Campbell is a young, highly intelligent student at M.I.T. Wanting to transfer to the Harvard School of Medicine, he learns that he cannot afford the $300,000 tuition. Then Ben is introduced into a small but secretive club by his math professor, Micky Rosa. The club has four other students and they are being trained by Mickey in the skill of blackjack card counting. Ben joins his new friends on secret weekend trips to Las Vegas, making hundreds of thousands of dollars winning blackjack at casino after casino. Greed and arrogance put Micky, as well as the group, on the radar of a brutal casino security enforcer named Cole Williams. Cole holds a personal grudge against Micky which threatens to undo everything the students have learned and earned.

“Bonneville,” with Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Joan Allen and Tom Skerritt. Faced with the decision of a lifetime, Arvilla Holden hijacks her two best friends and sets off in a vintage ’66 Bonneville convertible across the great American West to deliver her husband’s ashes to her step-daughter. What begins as a simple road trip for the trio will end up becoming a chance to rediscover themselves, their friendship, the importance of promises and always living life to the fullest.

“College Road Trip,” featuring Martin Lawrence, Raven-Symoné and Donny Osmond. A loving, but overprotective father, James Porter wants his daughter Melanie to attend nearby Northwestern College. When she’s waitlisted and called for an interview at Georgetown in Washington, D.C., James insists on a father-daughter road trip which he envisions being full of reminiscing, heart-to-heart conversations, and a healthy dose of persuasive promotion of Northwestern. The Porters manage to keep running into a super sweet dad and his college-bound daughter, who have a close relationship, are full of clean-cut enthusiasm, and for some reason, willing to befriend the Porters.

“Fool’s Gold,” starring Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson and Donald Sutherland. Finn is looking for a lost Spanish galleon in the Caribbean. He enlists the help of his ex-wife, Tess, who is intrigued until she finds he has no real proof of the Spanish ship’s location. Moe is an old mentor of Finn’s who also happens to be looking for the same treasure. Watching both is gangster rapper Bigg Bunny who Finn owes money to. Finn and Tess discover a clue as to where the fortune may lie. Now all Finn has to do is get the gold, get the girl, and get going before Bigg Bunny gets him.

“Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay,” starring John Cho, Kal Penn and Rob Corddry.
Harold and Kumar take an ill-fated flight to Amsterdam, but Kumar’s suspicious-looking bong is mistaken for a bomb. Their arrest prompts a racist Homeland Security official to send the boys to indefinite lockup at Guantanamo Bay. The guys manage to get away and make it back to the U.S., hoping the well-connected fiancé of Kumar’s old girlfriend, Vanessa, can get them out of their mess.

“Grace is Gone,” featuring John Cusack. Stanley Phillips is a sad, disconnected man unable to tell his young daughters that their mother, a soldier, has died in Iraq. Instead, he takes the girls on a road trip, where their innocent charm helps him rediscover a healing joy he thought he’d lost forever.

“Jumper,” with Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson and Diane Lane. David is a Jumper who can teleport himself anywhere in the world, which creates a fun and exciting life. Things turn deadly when David finds himself pursued by a secret organization sworn to kill Jumpers. He forms an uneasy alliance with another Jumper and becomes a player in a war that has been raging for thousands of years.
