Franklin School
From WakWiki
The Franklin School at the corner of Nahant and Traverse streets was built in 1902. The red brick, two-story rectangular school building was remodeled and enlarged in 1924-25.
The Franklin School was an elementary school that educated children on the East Side of town.
The original 1871 Franklin Grammar School was located where the current home at 26 Franklin Street sits today. It was a one-room frame "little red schoolhouse" style structure similar to the West Ward School on Prospect Street.
The 1902 brick Franklin School was built in response to the poulation boom that resulted from the arrival of the Boston & Maine Railroad and the burgeoning rattan furniture industry. Immigrants settling in the area to work in the nearby factories resulted in a steadily growing school population and the need for new and bigger schools.
