Montrose School

The Montrose School on Lowell Street in Wakefield, Massachusetts was built in 1918, and was enlarged and remodeled in 1930. The elementary school educated children in the Montrose section of Wakefield.
In 1998, the Montrose School was closed, with students moving in 1999 to the new Dolbeare School. For several years, the Montrose School building was leased to Wakefield Community Access Television, Inc. as interim quarters while they transitioned to more permanent studios at Wakefield High School. After WCAT moved out, the Montrose School served as temporary headquarters for the Wakefield Police and Fire departments during construction of the new Public Safety Building, which was completed in 2004.
In 2005, town officials began thinking about selling unused surplus school buildings, such as the Montrose, Hurd and Franklin schools. For this purpose, the School Department officially transferred control of these buildings to the Board of Selectmen.
In 2008, the town sold the Montrose School property to Symes Associates, Inc., which planned raze the Montrose School building and construct approximately 11 single family homes on the property.
