Supper Sleuths

The Detective and the Toga: Mysteries Set in Ancient Rome

The setting of this month’s topic is the glorious and nefarious world that for nearly a thousand years—from the founding of the Republic in 510 B.C. to the deposing of the last emperor, Romulus, in 476 A.D.—was ancient Rome. While our detectives in this sub-genre are limited by their time and place, the characters often mirror modern Private Investigators in their vices, love lives, and cleverness. For instance, Lindsey Davis’s popular and classic Marcus Didius Falco has a modern awareness that blends well with a corrupt atmosphere that can easily be compared to many present-day urban areas.

Included in this small group of historical mystery writers is the writing duo of Mary Reed and Eric Mayer who write of Byzantium in 500 A.D., similar in dress and historical flavor, their John the Eunuch brings a different Mediterranean perspective to the mix and presents a comparison for those of you have read everyone else.

The following is a list of titles by author. Whenever possible, the series is in order of publication date. This is meant to be an exhaustive list, but please let us know if you feel that a title should be here. Please read one or more titles, and come prepared to discuss your impressions of them with the group.
