1960s Mysteries — added 1/11/17

The Procedural is all about the police work and stresses realism of action. An actual police department is used; however, all the personnel are fictional. Most of the novels in this genre are written in the third person but the tone of the book may not always be objective. Many writers of this genre are policemen (or women) or ex-policemen. The popularity of procedurals has been encouraged by its television equivalent, the police show. Ironically, the best procedurals minimize the police procedure and heighten suspense, character, and surprise–their writers try to write like novelists.

In 1956, Ed McBain began his long running 87th Precinct series (U.S), which placed the police procedural firmly on the map. In many ways, this genre is a sub-set of the police detective novel. It is an ensemble piece which brings in all of the skills and demands at a local police station or precinct rather than focusing on any one detective. However, the lone police detective that acts more like a private PI is also popular like P.D.James’ Adam Dagliesh who is rarely seen in a police station or with a partner.

British or English procedurals abound. Scotland Yard is a favorite setting; indeed, it should probably have its own category.

In the Cozy, the body is often offstage; and most of the time, the author does not explicitly describe death or any other violence. The sleuths are almost always amateurs who have stumbled on a murder or crime that needs to be solved. The sleuth is usually, but not always, a woman, who solves the mystery through intuition and her knowledge of human nature. Small-town settings and gossip are integral parts of these mysteries. Real forensic evidence or police work has less to do with the solving of the crime then in most mysteries, and more than likely the amateur sleuth annoys the police even more than she may help them. In many cases, the protagonist’s significant other is on the police force. Cozies feature eccentric characters, a sense of community (small-town or enclosed communities like a college), and more than likely a humorous tone with witty dialogue. Cozies are usually fast-paced and shorter reads. Even the lightest of Cozies often offers a wry look at human nature and some exploration of social ssues.

The following is a list of authors who fit into this category. It is not a definitive list, and Cozies travel across other genre lines like the Culinary and Pet mysteries.

Wright, Eric.

Culinary mysteries are usually Cozies that prominently feature food and or cooking – sometimes with the recipes included. And like a Cozy, the body is often offstage, and most of the time, the author does not explicitly describe the death or any other violence. The sleuths are almost always amateurs who have sniffed out a murder or crime that needs to be solved. The detective may dine well, or may run a catering service, restaurant, or bakery. The sleuth is usually, but not always a woman, who solves the mystery through intuition and her knowledge of human nature. Small-town settings and gossip are integral parts of these savory stews of murder and mayhem.

April 2016 Forensics Redo: Hold the Psych!

Forensic detectives analyze anthropological or archaeological remains; use modern scientific tests, and/or psychological or psychiatric analysis to solve their crimes. Forensic mysteries take us through a world of evidence collection and analysis.

Forensic mysteries usually have a moderate to extreme gore factor, with or without much actual violence. Those with weak stomachs should be careful. Ask us to recommend something not too difficult on the stomach. One other word of warning: These mysteries are rarely light or humorous in tone. Many forensic stories are cross-listed in the Thriller, Police procedural, or Serial killer categories.

Former police officers now working as private investigators is a subgenre that offers the best of both major types of sleuths. The investigator has autonomy and independence that is not possible within the confines of an official law enforcement agency while, at the same time, he or she can display a knowledge and use of police procedures. Some of these sleuths are also listed as police detectives, as they played that role in their earlier books. (NoveList 10/07/04)

Most of these writers precede the Stieg Larsson Millennium trilogy but the popularity of this series is reason enough to re-visit the Scandinavian authors. “One reason for the sudden prominence of Scandinavian crime on U.S. shelves is the region’s newly found diversity since the break down of the Soviet Union and the resulting culture clash in a once very insular society. Henning Mankell’s Faceless Killers appeared in the U.S. in 1997, introducing readers to struggling police inspector Kurt Wallander who is so unlike the American hard-boiled hero and just as compelling. Mankell began the influx of Scandinavian authors who write about post-iron curtain crime and the new opportunities for corruption that occurs with the opening of borders.” (Ott, Bill. “A Hard-Boilied Gazetteer to Scandinavia,” Booklist, May 1, 2007, p.8-11).

True Crime Classics Re-do III: Truth is Stranger than Fiction
For a change of pace, Supper Sleuths is investigating the mystifying and scary world of true crime. All the books on this list are non-fiction—either accounts of true crimes or investigative reports that have been published in book form. Some crimes are capers and frauds, but most books on this list are about murders that happened to real people who left real survivors and sometimes went unsolved. (First discussed in 2008 and 2014; this is a revised list for our discussion in November 2016 and includes more current titles.)

So speculate about the culprits, murderers, and thieves, and try to figure out the real life mysteries. Few on this list are for the Cozy lover, so hold on for a bumpy ride and keep the lights on!
