Daily newspapers and magazines have always been available at the library, but not many of us have the time to come and read the actual paper at our own pace in the lovely, lofty environs of the library’s living room. And with subscription prices being what they are, where’s a body to go for long-form, quality news written by real reporters, when we barely have the bandwidth to decide which coffee will get us through the morning?
Beebe Library has the solution, and it’s sitting on the Newspapers and Magazines page on our website. There you’ll find quick and easy-access links to the current day’s digital editions of four major newspapers – The Boston Globe, The New York Times, USA Today, and, as of December, the Wall Street Journal! They’re all free to peruse on your personal device from work, home, or wherever you may be as you sip that first macchiato of the day. Maybe you like the NYTimes puzzles on your lunch break, or you need inspiration for what to cook tonight? The library’s got you covered with those NYTimes extras as well.
If you want to expand your news horizons over your breaktime Dunkalatte, try the feast of national and global daily papers and news magazines available on PressReader. Fair warning: it’s VERY easy to get distracted by all the shiny lifestyle and entertainment magazines that you can also find on PressReader, but…focus….today, we’re just looking at the news. Your choice of newspapers includes offerings like the Chicago Tribune, The Christian Science Monitor, Canada’s Globe and Mail, The Irish Times, and Britain’s The Guardian. On the magazine side, we have Newsweek, The New Yorker, Foreign Affairs, Vanity Fair, and many others. And that’s not to mention tech news from the likes of WIRED, MIT Technology Review, and Popular Mechanics. Speak another language? What better way to keep up with both your news and your language skills than to read one of the many PressReader offerings from all over the world. You can choose from France, Italy, India, China, Spain, and more.
PressReader lets you “follow” favorite publications and interests, so that your preferred content appears at the top of the page when you log in, and daily stories are curated for you based on the interests you have indicated. Most of the newspapers allow you to download the current edition to read later, and many have recent back issues available as well. No need to worry about awkward zooming and scrolling – the interface is great, whether you’re on your phone (there’s an app!), laptop, or PC.
So sit down, pour yourself an afternoon cuppa, relax and get your news at wakefieldlibrary.org (psst…it’s under Books and More/Digital Content).
