July is Graphic Novels in Libraries Month!

Art possesses the extraordinary power to encapsulate vast amounts of information. Despite containing fewer words, graphic novels harness a profound ability to engage readers’ thoughts–akin to the traditional novel. In fact, visual narratives often provide an even greater wealth of context, thanks to captivating illustrations and intricate details. Things like facial expressions, body gestures, and worldscapes–which cannot be seen in written word–can be drawn to fit an author’s precise vision, offering readers distinct characters and settings. There are even instances where the art itself becomes the storyteller.

Graphic novels are not all about superheroes! There are a diverse array of graphic novels, which span the gamut of traditional nonfiction and fiction genres–including horror, romance, fantasy, science fiction, historical fiction, mystery, satire, and more. Art styles differ dramatically–ranging from line drawn illustrations to beautifully complex color paintings.
