September is Library Card Sign-Up Month – do YOU have a card? (If not, start here!)
Since 1987, Library Card Sign-Up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. But it’s not just children who should sign up for a card – libraries are for everyone!
Why get a card, you ask? First of all, it’s free, so really, why not? But really, there are lots of other resources the library provides.
You already know we have books (and audiobooks and DVDs and newspapers and magazines…). But we have so much more! There’s video games, Wonderbooks, and discounted museum passes. You can even borrow a Roku from our Library of Things so you can catch up on Apple TV+, HBO Max, and Disney+ shows.
And library cards aren’t just for people who come to the library in person – there’s a lot you can do online with your card. We have ebooks and audiobooks from Libby and hoopla, or delivery of physical books right to your door if you’re homebound. Love movies but don’t want to pay for another streaming service? hoopla has those too, and so does Kanopy.
If you need MORE convincing to get a card (but you probably don’t), check out this fun calculator that will help you understand just how much money you can save by using the library. The one thing you can’t quantify, though, is the value of the connections Beebe Library fosters in the Wakefield community.
