Summer is in full swing here in Massachusetts and with an average temperature of 80-85 degrees, beating the heat is a consideration when planning for outdoor adventures. Below are some ideas for travel within New England that can offer a little relief. Better yet, Wakefield residents may be able to score a discount by using the library museum pass program, generously funded by the Friends of Beebe Library! The conditions for every pass are different, so check the museum pass section of the website here, or call the library for details.
- Enjoy the Coastal Breezes: New England has a stunning coastline, pristine beaches and charming seaside towns. If you don’t mind the crowds, take advantage of the ocean breezes by visiting popular coastal destinations like Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, or Nantucket. The library offers a pass for the ferry to the Boston Harbor Islands. Of course, North Shore beaches are equally stunning, and may be less crowded!
- Discover Tranquil Lakes and Rivers: Escape the heat by exploring New England’s beautiful lakes and rivers. Select Mass Audubon sanctuaries offer paddle boarding or kayaking, see more details here and check the library website to see if a parking pass is available. The library also has passes for boating right here in Wakefield on Lake Quannapowitt. These natural playgrounds offer various recreational activities and provide a welcome respite from the summer heat.
- Explore the Majestic Mountains: New England is home to several mountain ranges, where temperatures tend to be cooler during the summer months. Explore the scenic White Mountains in New Hampshire or Green Mountains of Vermont. Take a hike, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and enjoy expansive views from the summits. Closer to home, seek shade in some of our beautiful State Parks. There are State Parks across the Commonwealth, take a look at the Massachusetts State Parks Guide for a detailed guide. Parking is free of charge using the library museum pass.
Have a wonderful summer, stay cool, and don’t forget that the library has air-conditioning!
